Breach of Rental Lease?

Breach of Rental Lease? Our apartment lease states that 30 days notice is required for moving out and that the notice must be given at the end of the month (the latter information is buried and is stated in legalese). We gave 30 days notice, but not at the end of the month, so we were charged a relet fee and rent for the remainder of the month that we moved out.
Before giving notice, I called to make sure that our notice was sufficient, and there was no mention of the relet fee and paying rent. Were they obligated to inform me since I had asked before giving notice? Do I have to pay all this money?
It seems unfair; like a big business vs. little person situation. On what grounds can I appeal?

Rental Lease
Hi,
My husband and I rented a home for about 5 months and then there the toilet flooded upstairs leaving fecis and urine to go through the ceiling ruining our stuff in the living room. We took care of our stuff with renters insurance but after asking them numerous times to fix the ceiling due to mildew and just being unhabitable they did not do so so we moved out after living there for 4 months with the ceiling not being fixed. We left 4 months early due to this now they are trying to take us to court for the rest of the money on the lease. We left the house in immaculate condition and we agreed that they keep the $1700 deposit since we were leaving early. In the lease it specifically says they are to keep the house in good condition. Do I have a leg o stand on?
