Rancher hiring Day labor
I am a private Rancher who does hire day labor. Would like to cover them (protect me) in case of an accident on the job. I do not have any kind of a contract with them ie: ”Contract or Hold Harmless Agreements”. I will pay a yearly premium, but since there is no payroll, would or is an audit needed??? Sincerely –name removed—-name removed–

I do not believe that you will have any problem getting coverage, but the setting of your premiums may be a little tricky, depending on your bookkeeping system. If you have credible records, however, it should be fairly straightforward. If you pay cash and do not keep records of employees, it will be a bit difficult for the carrier to determine who/what it is they are insuring. Your coverage will probably be through SCF of Arizona, and I doubt yours is the first request of this kind.
Another possibility for you to consider is a PEO (Proffesional Employment Organization,) which would get the workers’ comp coverage and handle pay records for you, relieving you of the burden.
I sometimes represent employers regarding premium and rating matters, so feel free to call if you need counsel. My numbers are 602-253-1789 and 800-863-4449.
