How to break the lease when tenant got lay-off from his job ?

How to break the lease when tenant got lay-off from his job ?
Hi,
I have a lease term of 17 months, rent is 900$. I got laidoff from my job from a big company recently. I can’t afford to stay in this apartment any more. I am in Lowell, MA. I just completed 10 months of lease term. Still 7 months to go. Lease agreement says that if I have to leave the apartment I have to give 60 day notice and pay two months rent as lease breakage charges(900+900= 1800$)I heard that there are some laws which says that if an employee gets laid-off from job, he doesn’t have to pay lease breakage charges in Massachusetts state. Is there any law ?
Please reply me..

THanks
Bhas

    Hi,

You should check the resources at http://www.lawlib.state.ma.us/SLRS/Web_Sites/Mass__Topical/mass__topical.html about landlord tenant.

Do you know any responsible person who would assume your lease for the duration? How far would your landlord go (how much money would he spend) in attempting to force you to pay the lease termination penalty?

    Best wishes.
